Un proyecto que nació del silencio… y se transformó en esperanza

Todo comenzó con un mensaje inesperado. Nuestro ahora Gobernador Electo, PP Nicolás Zalles, recibió una invitación de la Fundación Starkey, aquella organización que durante años llevó audífonos gratuitos a miles de personas en el mundo. La curiosidad lo llevó a conectarse a una reunión virtual… y fue ahí donde todo cambió.

En la pantalla, le explicaron cómo funcionaban las campañas de adaptación y entrega gratuita de audífonos. Pero no era solo una explicación técnica. Era un vistazo a la magnitud, al impacto humano, a la vida que podía transformarse con un solo dispositivo. Nicolás comprendió que aquello era más grande que él, más grande que su club. Y decidió actuar.

Volvió con la idea al Club Rotario Sirari, donde compartió la visión de llevar audición y esperanza a quienes no la tenían. Los socios aceptaron con entusiasmo, pero pronto se dieron cuenta de que no bastaba con la buena voluntad: no eran suficientes voluntarios para algo tan grande.

Entonces hicieron algo muy rotario: invitaron a otros clubes de Santa Cruz a sumarse.

Fue así como comenzaron las primeras preselecciones. Y lo que encontraron superó cualquier expectativa: más de 2,000 personas llegaron solo en la primera jornada. Cada una con una historia. Cada una con una dificultad distinta. Cada una cargando años de silencio acumulado.

Ahí descubrimos una comunidad enorme, silenciosa, invisibilizada por las autoridades, formada mayormente por familias de escasos recursos y por personas que viajaban desde provincias lejanas, con la esperanza de volver a escuchar.

El Aftercare: donde entendimos la verdadera dimensión del problema

Cuando llegaron las campañas de limpieza y cuidado del oído —nuestro llamado Aftercare— invitamos a médicos voluntarios, otorrinolaringólogos, rotarios y rotaractianos. Todos trabajando en un mismo espacio, organizando circuitos, limpiando oídos, registrando pacientes, escuchando historias.

Y fue ahí donde la realidad se volvió evidente:

• En la mayoría de los casos, nadie les había enseñado cómo cuidar sus oídos.

• Muchos niños habían perdido la audición progresivamente por enfermedades no tratadas o mal tratadas.

• Los costos de las consultas especializadas eran inalcanzables.

• Los audífonos en el mercado eran excesivamente caros.

• Los cursos de lengua de señas eran pocos, difíciles de encontrar y demasiado costosos para la mayoría.

Era un círculo que condenaba a cientos de personas a vivir aisladas, adaptándose como podían, resignándose a la pérdida de comunicación, educación y oportunidades.

Cuando Fundación Starkey cerró… quedó el compromiso

El cierre de la Fundación Starkey dejó un vacío inmenso. Pero también dejó algo más: un grupo de rotarios capacitados, provenientes de diferentes clubes de Santa Cruz, que no estaban dispuestos a dejar morir aquel sueño.

Nos dijimos que, aunque Starkey ya no estuviera, La Fundación Rotaria sí podía ayudarnos a retomar las campañas de entrega gratuita de audífonos. Podíamos volver a atender, adaptar, capacitar, educar. Podíamos seguir formando a la comunidad en salud auditiva, uso, cuidado y mantenimiento de audífonos.

Teníamos el conocimiento. Teníamos la experiencia. Y, sobre todo, teníamos la voluntad.

Porque cuando uno escucha… cambia su mundo.

A esta comunidad le tomamos cariño. Nos conmovió su lucha silenciosa, su resiliencia, sus ganas de comunicarse, de estudiar, de integrarse, de sentirse útiles.

Sabemos que un audífono no solo devuelve un sonido. Devuelve una risa. Una conversación familiar. Una oportunidad laboral. Una vida que vuelve a abrirse.

Por eso seguimos aquí. Por eso seguimos luchando. Porque Santa Cruz —y Bolivia entera— merece escuchar mejor. Y porque cuando un rotario ve una necesidad tan grande, no mira hacia otro lado. Construye, une, convoca… y transforma.

A Project Born From Silence… and Transformed Into Hope

It all began with an unexpected message.Our now District Governor Elect, PP Nicolás Zalles, received an invitation from the Starkey Foundation, back when it still existed. Curious, he joined a virtual meeting to learn more. What he heard that day would change everything.

On the screen, Starkey explained how their large-scale hearing aid fitting and free-distribution campaigns worked. But it wasn’t just technical information—it was a glimpse into the magnitude of the impact, into lives being changed by a single device. Nicolás immediately understood that this project was bigger than him, and bigger than his club alone. And he felt called to act.

He brought the idea to the Rotary Club of Sirari, sharing the vision of bringing hearing and hope to those who had none. The members embraced the idea wholeheartedly, but soon realized that good intentions were not enough: they didn’t have enough volunteers for a project of this scale.

So they did something truly Rotary:they invited other clubs in Santa Cruz to join the effort.

That’s how the first preselection days began. And the response was overwhelming:more than 2,000 people arrived in just the first round.Each one with a story.Each one with a different level of hearing difficulty.Each one carrying years of silence.

It was then that we discovered a massive, overlooked community—people who had been ignored by the authorities, families with very limited resources, and individuals who traveled from distant provinces, hoping for a chance to hear again.

The Aftercare: Where We Understood the True Dimension of the Need

During the Aftercare sessions—our cleaning and ear-care days—we invited volunteer doctors, ENT specialists, Rotarians, and Rotaractors. Together, they coordinated patient flow, performed ear cleanings, registered participants, and listened to countless stories.

And that’s when the depth of the problem became clear:

• Most people had never been taught how to properly care for their ears.

• Many children progressively lost their hearing due to untreated or poorly treated illnesses.

• Specialized medical care was financially out of reach.

• Hearing aids on the market were extremely expensive.

• Sign-language courses were scarce, difficult to access, and too costly for families.

It was a cycle that forced thousands of people to adapt to a life of silence—limiting communication, education, and opportunities.

When Starkey Fundation

Closed… the Commitment Remained

The closure of the Starkey Foundation left a huge gap.But it also left something powerful behind: a group of trained Rotarians, from various clubs across Santa Cruz, who were not willing to let the mission end.

We knew that even without Starkey, The Rotary Foundation could help us bring these campaigns back—to provide free hearing aids, offer trainings on hearing health, and teach families how to use, handle, and care for their hearing devices.

We had the knowledge.We had the experience.And above all, we had the commitment.

Because When Someone Hears… Their World Changes

We grew attached to this community.Their resilience, their silent struggles, their desire to communicate, to study, to be included—it moved us deeply.

A hearing aid doesn’t just restore sound.It restores laughter.It restores family conversations.It restores opportunity.It restores dignity.

That is why we continue.That is why we keep pushing forward.Because Santa Cruz—and Bolivia—deserves to hear better.

And because when a Rotarian sees such a profound need, we don’t look away.We unite, we build, we serve… and we transform lives.
